DELL PowerEdge 2850 Watercooled!

~~DISCUSSION~~

Here are some nice pictures of a DELL PE 2850, but thats not a normal system - it's fully watercooled!

This is a posting for the linux-poweredge mailinglist! Thanks for Michael for allowing me to post this photos!

Are here goes some information from michaelwd1979@o2.pl about the server:

Hello,
this our water cooled PE2850. This server works for a small
company (4 friends) as a data storage, backup, svn repository and
compilation machine. Now it will not fit any rack but we do not have
any racks anyway. I am working on it directly quite a bit and now I
have a lot of problems with setting up X window on gentoo 64. DRI
freezes system with radeon on motherboard as well as with external
PCI ATI card. I can not set up dual-head system (on PCI Matrox and
ATI). In graphics mode (no DRI) calling lspci also freezes system.

If anyone have any experience with setting up X window on Dell servers
please help. I assume that I am doing something totally wrong but
after about a week of digging a have no idea what. MTRRs? Interrupts?
I have tried all possible combinations of xorg.conf settings without
any progress.

Back to the pictures. inside.jpg shows what is inside :-) (final
assembly). Note the wires connected to fan plugs. side1, side2 and
top are outside views. The box near heat exchanger is water tank with
pumps, another box near fan carries some electronics, that controls
pumps, fan and sends virtual fan rotation signals to server. In this
way any failure of pumps or fan will be seen by the server as fan
failure and OMSA will shut it down. The fan works with very low rpm,
and it pushes air into the box. This air flows throw heat exchanger,
hdds, and power supply unit. Now main noise source are HDDs, however
we have only 3 anyway. During no load CPUs temp is bout 35-40 deg,
while with full load it is 58-60. Any comments, suggestions, opinions
are welcomed.

Regards, Michael
